Cross-school project engages students with life on the home front

Pupils at Tameside Primary Academy recently took part in a collaborative art project with students from Shireland Collegiate Academy, exploring life on the home front during World War II. The project offered pupils a unique opportunity to bring historical learning to life through hands-on creative work in partnership with older peers.

Throughout the project, Tameside and Shireland students worked together to design and create artworks inspired by wartime shelters and the experiences of people during the Blitz. Shireland students provided guidance and support while also adding their own artistic contributions, creating a two-way learning experience. The collaboration helped pupils develop a deeper understanding of history while building teamwork, mentorship and artistic skills.

Cem Yalluri, Associate Principal at Tameside Primary Academy, said: “Exploring periods of history such as the Second World War can be challenging, but it’s important that pupils encounter these topics in a way that is both sensitive and meaningful.

“This project allowed our pupils to understand the experiences of people at the time while expressing their own creative interpretations. Working alongside Shireland students also helped them build confidence, resilience, and a real sense of pride in what they achieved.”

The initiative demonstrates the value of thoughtful cross-school collaboration. Pupils were able to engage with sensitive historical topics in a meaningful way, while older students developed leadership and mentoring skills, offering a rich, creative educational experience for all.
