Pupils at Tameside Primary Academy were treated to a fascinating space-themed experience during a special visit from a local astronomer from the Walsall Astronomical Society. The session gave children the chance to explore the wonders of the universe and deepen their understanding of space in an exciting, hands-on way.
The astronomer demonstrated a range of telescopes used for space exploration, including advanced models capable of capturing images of space and sending them directly to computers. Pupils were fascinated by the technology and eager to learn more about how astronomers explore the universe. They also enjoyed discovering how solar eclipses occur, understanding the phases of the moon and viewing detailed close-up images of the moon’s craters.
One of the highlights was when the astronomer brought in real meteorite fragments. Pupils were amazed to hold pieces of space in their hands and learn the difference between meteorites and comets.
The session also explored the planets in our solar system, helping pupils understand their relative sizes compared to one another and the Sun. To wrap up the day, the children were introduced to distant galaxies far beyond our own, sparking their imaginations and leaving them in awe of the vastness of space. The visit from the Walsall Astronomical Society left a lasting impression, inspiring curiosity and a newfound interest in space exploration across the school.
